Celebrate National Poetry Month with the Youth Department at the
Apache Junction Library. We have poems that you can put in your pocket to take
home. You may also want to check out a poetry book either from our poetry
display or from our children's non-fiction section. Poems can be found under
the call number J 811. There, you may find anthologies by Shel Silverstein or
Dr. Seuss, just to name a few!
Perhaps after reading some
poems, you may want to try a fun poetry activity at home. One fun activity I like
to do with kids is chalk poetry. First, ask your child to come up with an
original poem or pick out a favorite poem. With chalk, have your child write
down their poem on the sidewalk or a chalkboard and add illustrations.
Depending on your child's age, you may just want to ask your child to draw a
picture inspired by a poem you've read together or to write down two rhyming
words. Participate in this activity with your child and write up your own poem
with them. This is a great opportunity to build your child's vocabulary and
fine-motor skills which improves their reading and writing abilities.
