July Bulletin Board

It is that time of year again! The Summer Reading Program is winding down and it is almost time to go back to school. Even though this time of year can be hectic, don't forget to visit the library. The library is a great place to find relief from the summer heat while you shop for school supplies. It also is a great place to discover a new favorite author or book. So, stop by the library and take a look at some of our new titles on display. You may even discover a new series that you can continue to read throughout the school year!

May Bulletin Board

For the month of May, the I Spy bulletin board pictured above will be up in the Youth Department. If you or your kids like search and find games, you will love our new bulletin board. We also have many search and find books that you can check-out such as the I SPY and Where's Waldo series. Keep a look-out for our Scavenger Hunts too, which we put out each month by the New JR Readers!

April is National Poetry Month!

Celebrate National Poetry Month with the Youth Department at the Apache Junction Library. We have poems that you can put in your pocket to take home. You may also want to check out a poetry book either from our poetry display or from our children's non-fiction section. Poems can be found under the call number J 811. There, you may find anthologies by Shel Silverstein or Dr. Seuss, just to name a few!

Perhaps after reading some poems, you may want to try a fun poetry activity at home. One fun activity I like to do with kids is chalk poetry. First, ask your child to come up with an original poem or pick out a favorite poem. With chalk, have your child write down their poem on the sidewalk or a chalkboard and add illustrations. Depending on your child's age, you may just want to ask your child to draw a picture inspired by a poem you've read together or to write down two rhyming words. Participate in this activity with your child and write up your own poem with them. This is a great opportunity to build your child's vocabulary and fine-motor skills which improves their reading and writing abilities.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten!

Sign up your child for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten at the Apache Junction Public Library! Any child who has not started kindergarten is welcome to participate, and the goal is to have 1,000 books read before your child begins kindergarten! The program is free; just go to a library service desk to get your kiddo started. Upon sign up, your child will receive their first tracker sheet with 100 stickers and a free Friends of the Library book bag. You can count any book that has been read to them and even read the same book over and over again. For every 100 books read, your child gets to pick a free book to keep. At the end of the program, your child will have 10 free books!

Teddy Bear Sleepover!

The Teddy Bear Sleepover was so much fun! Thank you to all that attended. Overnight, the stuffed animals went on some interesting adventures and got into a little bit of trouble. Please click on the following link to see photos of what the stuffed animals were up to last night at the library. If you were unable to pick up your stuffed animal or would like a pamphlet with photos of their adventures, drop by the Youth Desk!

The Youth Staff also delighted in reading the completed Teddy Bear Sleepover Permission Slips. Many children gave detailed instructions as to how to take care of their stuffed animals telling us their bedtimes and their favorite snacks. For example, the Ariel doll's favorite snack was soggy cupcakes and Freddy, the bear's bedtime was at 12:00 AM. That is pretty late for a Teddy. One child gave us a small backpack with instructions and supplies as to how to take care of her Teddy. It was adorable! These are just a few examples of how clever and imaginative children can be.
